Take Advantage of Holiday Turkey Prices!

I love this time of the year for the simple fact that the turkeys are always on sale for CHEAP!!  Most people get theirs just for Thanksgiving, but not me (that’s what my husband’s turkey he get from work is for).  Each time I go to the store and I see those nice big turkeys on sale, I buy one, and so does my husband!  (Now, I think we have four stashed in our freezers!)  Sunday I bought an additional one and left it out for Monday

On Monday I washed it and stuffed it with fresh thyme and rosemary from my herb pot.  I also cut up an onion and stuffed that in it.  I rubbed the outside with olive oil, sprinkled a little salt and pepper on it and put it in the roasting pan.  I cooked it about 3 hours.  Once it was nice and golden, I tented a piece of aluminum foil over it and waited for it to finish cooking.  That night we had, of course, turkey for dinner, and the rest I cut up and put in the refrigerator for the rest of the week’s dinners and sandwiches for my husband’s lunches.

Everything left over, after picking all the meat off, was put in a pot and covered with water.  I added some carrots, celery, onion and seasonings and turned it into broth.  I divided it into one cup and four cup containers for the freezer, and kept one pan full out for soup this week.

I love how a ten dollar turkey turns into three different dinners, lunches for my husband and enough broth to last me for a while!  I do the same thing with whole chickens when they go on sale, except I usually cook two or three since they are smaller.

  1. What a great idea. I am hoping to earn a free one from the grocery store. There is so many things you can do with turkey.
